BoysGrow: Changing Lives in Missouri

In Kansas City, Missouri, a unique nonprofit is helping young men cultivate more than just crops, they’re growing confidence, discipline, and real-world skills. BoysGrow is an innovative program that blends agriculture, mentorship, and entrepreneurship to prepare urban youth for brighter futures.

Rooted in Purpose

Founded with a mission to empower teenage boys, BoysGrow focuses on providing meaningful opportunities for personal and professional growth. The organization primarily serves young men ages 14–18, many of whom are entering the workforce for the first time. Through a structured, hands-on experience, participants learn responsibility, accountability, and the value of hard work (BoysGrow, n.d.).

Learning Through the Land

At the heart of the program is a working farm, where participants spend time planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. But the lessons go far beyond agriculture. BoysGrow uses farming as a platform to teach:

  • Job readiness and workplace expectations

  • Teamwork and communication skills

  • Entrepreneurial thinking and business basics

  • Time management and personal responsibility

Participants are paid for their work, reinforcing the connection between effort and reward while building early employment experience (Kansas Farm Food Connection, n.d.).

More Than a Job

BoysGrow isn’t just about farming, it’s about shaping futures. The program typically spans two years, giving participants the time and consistency needed to develop lasting habits and skills. Many young men leave the program better prepared for college, careers, or vocational paths.

Community partners like United Way of Greater Kansas City highlight the organization’s impact, noting that BoysGrow helps youth build confidence and leadership skills that extend far beyond the farm (United Way of Greater Kansas City, n.d.).

BoysGrow Cultivating Long-Term Impact

By combining mentorship with real-world work experience, BoysGrow is addressing a critical need: preparing young people for adulthood in a supportive, structured environment. The organization emphasizes not only skill-building but also character development helping participants become reliable employees, engaged citizens, and confident individuals.

In a world where many teens struggle to find direction, BoysGrow offers a powerful alternative. Through farming, mentorship, and meaningful work, the program is planting seeds that will continue to grow for years to come.
